The new (new) Ubuntero.org

May 13, 2009 3:55 pm

Ubuntero.org was born out of a desire to provide the Ubuntu community a corner of the social web to call it's own. The first iteration of this site was a fully functional social network built on the superb ELGG software. We (the developers of Ubuntero.org) had a blast creating it and learned a lot in the process. The site was a success by our standards, growing quickly to a few thousand users. We learned pretty quickly, however, that there just wasn't demand out there for yet-another-social-network focused on Ubuntu. There were already plenty of well established and respected social networks out there, and the community was, by and large, content with the already existing Ubuntu groups and pages on these services.

The focus of Ubuntero.org remains social communication and the Ubuntu community, but the implementation is changing. Some time ago, we announced that Ubuntero would be reborn as a blog to highlight the community we love. We stated further that we would be working on a way to make Ubuntero.org directly community driven. What you see now is the culmination of our efforts and brainstorming.

Ubuntero is an aggregator, combing the Internet for content generated by Ubuntu users about Ubuntu. We are excited about this new service. We will continue to blog occasionally, but the focus will remain on community generated content.
